Hickory has a more varied design than many other popular kinds of wood like oak and maple but it is also much more durable. On the Janka Hardness Test Hickory scored 1820 whereas maple scored 1450 and red oak only 1290. This means that hickory is a great choice for rooms with high footfall or in houses where you expect your floor will experience scratches and knocks (such as homes with children or pets). It will expand and contract a bit more than other wood which you should think about if you plan to install hickory wood flooring in a room that will experience high humidity and variable temperatures. If you are unsure you should ask your floor fitter or you can speak to one of our experts.
