Palisander heartwood is a direct descendent of the Rosewood hardwood ranges with an medium orange to a darker reddish brown; sometimes with darker black streaks. Yellow sapwood is clearly demarcated from heartwood.
Colour tends to darken with age, though it tends to maintain its colour better than other colourful exotic woods. Palisander is also known as Dikela and Kibota and also spelt as Pallisandre in Espanic countries.
As an exotic hardwood Palisander is dark reddish brown with very distinctive grains and dark brown wavy straight lines that will subtly darken with age, its sapwood of brown blends with its grain which is quilted but wavy with straight fine texture.
Maples & Birch ethically only sell Palisander that is milled from trees sourced from sustainable ethical farmed forests which are regulated by ethical environmental groups/bodies that govern the planets valuable environmental forests.
Palisander is of the same family as Wenge but with lighter sapwood and more visible grains of pattern, as a hardwood, it is closely related to Panga Panga.
As a species, Palisander was listed and considered as endangered ‘CITES 1’ but is now listed as ‘CITES 2’ allowing limited use under very strict licenses with a proven chain of custody. Maples & Birch strictly ensure that our suppliers adhere to this.
